Stryper – B.B. King’s – NYC – 9/24
By Jeff
Christian rock legends Stryper packed the house at B.B. King’s in Times Square,
and not a concertgoer left unsatisfied. Touring behind their first album of new
material in 15 years, the band’s return to the Big Apple showcased a familiar
and also fresh sound that was intense as ever.
Opening with “For You” from their 2003’s “Best Of “, the band deviated from
straight up greatest hits and went with mostly obscure gems that pleased the
diehards. The beginning of the set focused on the first 2 albums, as well as the
current “Reborn”. “Loving You” and “Rock That Makes Me Roll” showed the group
doesn’t forget its roots, and “Open Your Eyes” and “Make You Mine” were well
accepted new faire. “Calling On You” and “Free”, from the best-selling “To Hell
With The Devil”, recalled the days when the pop metal quartet staked their claim
in the MTV rotation. The band unplugged for the touching “Lady” and jazzed up
“Honestly”. Delivering a scorching version of “The Way”, Michael Sweet displayed
the voice that is indeed God given. The entire band was as tight as ever, and
looked fabulous as well.
Ending the night with a prayer, the reborn again rockers delivered the goods to
the packed NYC audience. The band are as vital as ever, with powerful new
material that complements the classics. Catch them in a city near you.
