Kill Hannah

Mat Devine - Lead vocals
Jon Radtke - Guitar/synth
Dan Wiese - Guitar
Greg Corner - Bass
Garret Hammond - Drums

Let's start off by saying I had never listened to this band before Thursday night's show in NYC. My plan was to make it there around 9:30 or so, so we could catch H.I.M. But we got there just in time for Kill Hannah to start their set. At first glance, you can truly understand why they've got a large female fanbase. On their image - the only thing that comes to mind is a line I read in one review, "the Duran Duran of this generation." And in this industry, where how you look plays a significant part (unfortunately), these guys definitely have it going on. Just don't get put off by their looks, because there's alot more to them than a bunch of pretty faces.

Now, the show. From the beginning of the set, until the end... I was completely hooked. Aside from the show being visually pleasing, there was sound appeal as well. And there's really no definite way to describe their sound, as the music somewhat varied from song to song. But that's part of what makes these guys so great. Their sense of uniqueness, and creativity. Try to combine pop/punk, with a hit of electronica, and a bit of glam. Now you've got Kill Hannah. And they're amazing.

I must say the light tubes on their guitars distracted me a bit at first. (It's the ADD I guess. Oh, look - shiny things!) But I got past that once they started to play.
Mat, who's got this effeminate, breathy sound to his voice, definitely delivered music to my ears, while showing us that, yes, rock music can be sensitive without being labeled as EMO. It's not all about being loud! That's what the music's for.

The music... In-fucking-credible. Along with the infectious vocals, you've got some thrashing guitars, pumping basslines, some very impressive percussion, continuous electronic backgrounds, and an insane amount of energy and passion. And it all makes for one show that should not be missed.
Needless to say, it was one kickass show - and only left me wanting to hear more. So much, that I went out and got their CD "For Never and Ever" the very next morning. And of course, that left me with something extra to look forward to at Tuesday night's show.

And not only did Tuesday's show rock - But they did an unbelievable cover of Billy Idol's "Rebel Yell." What makes them even more worthwhile - they're NICE guys, that genuinely enjoy meeting their fans. So if you get a chance to check them out - look for them after the show!

To sum it up: If you took away certain aspects of this band - the visual effects, their look, the crowds - the passion that makes their music, would still be there.
