The opening strains of “Castellorizon” are a warm, familiar space rock sound that permeates the listener’s senses. It is automatically apparent that David Gilmour is not straying too far from his trademark Diamond-like era. And that is a good thing.
The title track is a bluesy, acoustic number that features a blistering Gilmour solo that builds to a crescendo. David Crosby and Graham Nash add their vocal harmonies, and longtime compatriot Richard Wright is on Hammond organ. “The Blue” continues the mellow pace, as well as the guitar virtuosity. Highlighted by Gilmour, Phil Manzanera (Roxy Music) and Chris Thomas on production, Gilmour’s prog rock prowess magnificently seeps through the speakers. “Red Sky At Night” features Dave on saxophone and is a clear indication of where this man’s music is in 2006; a classic rock sound that has matured without losing its edge. “Then I Close My Eyes” is beautiful, with a country twang, while “A Pocketful of Stones” is a piano ballad that showcases David’s vocals.
This special edition contains a bonus DVD containing David’s New York and Abbey Road AOL sessions. Floydheads will get their fix by a stellar version of the late, great Syd Barrett’s “Astronomy Domine”, as well as “High Hopes” and “Comfortably Numb” (where Dave’s closing guitar work takes flight). “On An Island” is one of the year’s top rock releases.
